Born in 1971, composer Valerio Sannicandro started building his oeuvre in the late nineties of the twentieth century. In the meantime, this oeuvre comprises some fifty mainly instrumental works. With this CD, however, the composer finally breaks through with the first CD on a major label. And it is nice that Wergo stands up for Sannicandro, because if the music we hear here is an indication of his entire oeuvre, it still holds some promise. The work Ius Lucis is very original in design alone: two ensembles play one work in two spaces. In addition, a battery of electronics, microphones and loudspeakers has been installed in both rooms: the sound of each ensemble is received to influence and distort the sound of the other ensemble. In a live recording, the piece is performed twice, so that the listeners can swap spaces during the break and then, as it were, hear the ‚other side‘ of the piece. This is also done on this CD: the same piece is on it twice. Sannicandro creates a completely unique, dark and whimsical maze of sound, not simple but extremely compelling. Sannicandro is a worthy successor to composers such as Boulez and Ferneyhough. https://www.muziekweb.nl/en/Link/EBX0973/Ius-lucis
